Man Arrested in Death of Arkansas Student
A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Oklahoma for first-degree murder in connection with the death of a University of Arkansas student at her off-campus apartment last week. Katharine Wood, a senior English major, was the third female college student killed within a week at U.S. universities.
Police found Wood's body at her apartment a few blocks from the Fayetteville campus after receiving a call reporting hearing a woman arguing with someone. Within 10 hours of finding her body, police arrested Zachariah Marcyniuk, 28, who previously had a romantic relationship with Wood.
Marcyniuk was stopped by a state trooper in western Oklahoma. Police identified him as a 28-year-old junior at the University of Arkansas who dropped out last month.
Police said Marcyniuk has a criminal history that includes charges of first-degree false imprisonment, aggravated assault, violation of a protection order, burglary, theft of property and first-degree criminal mischief.
Katharine Wood was the third female college student who died violently last week. Lauren Burk, a freshman at Auburn University, was found shot in the head beside a highway north of campus and her car was found burning in a campus parking lot. Eve Carson, the student body president of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was found shot to death on a city street.
