Former Teacher Pamela Rogers Gets Parole Hearing

A former Tennessee elementary school teacher, whose probation was revoked when she continued to send a 13-year-old boy sexually explicit photos of herself, had her first parole hearing Wednesday. Pamela Rogers has served almost two years of her 10-year sentence for sexual exploitation of a child.

Rogers and her attorney requested early release for the 30-year-old, pointing to her record at the Tennessee Prison for Women. But a parole hearing officer denied the request and said he would recommend to the state parole board that her parole be denied.

He also recommended that Rogers not come up for parole again until the year 2014.

Horrible Lapse of Judgment

During her parole hearing, Rogers explained how she ended up in prison.

"It was, just a horrible lapse of judgment," she said. "It was a terrible mistake. I realize now I was searching for something, somebody… to just, to meet the deepest needs of my soul. No matter what happened, I know I made the choices I made and it's my responsibility, too."

"I am eager to get on with my life," she told the officer. "I want to make my family, friends and loved ones proud of me again, and I want to make myself proud of me again."

Rogers was arrested in February 2005 for having sexual intercourse and oral sex with the 13-year-old student. She pleaded no contest and her sentenced was suspended on the condition that she not contact the student.

Board to Vote Later

But Rogers sent nude photos to the boy, got caught, and while she was waiting for a hearing on her probation revocation, continued to contact him. Her probation on her eight-year sentence was revoked and two more years were added to her sentence for the subsequent conviction.

The full state parole board will vote on the case at a later date.
