Daughter Arrested in Texas Family's Slaughter

Monday March 3, 2008
Upset because her parents demanded that she break up with her 19-year-old boyfriend, a 16-year-old Texas girl has been charged with killing her mother and two brothers and setting their home on fire. She is being held along with three other suspects on $1.5 million bond.

The only survivor of the pre-dawn assault on the rural East Texas home was the girl's father, Terry Caffey, who was shot five times in the head, chest and back but managed to crawl 300 yards through the woods to get help from a neighbor. He is undergoing surgery to remove the shotgun slugs from his body.

According to police reports, the 16-year-old girl; her boyfriend, Charlie James Wilkinson, 19 (pictured above); and two other accomplices went through the family's home in the early morning hours Saturday shooting and stabbing family members. Police later found the teenage girl hiding in a mobile home. Also charged with three counts of capital murder are Charles Allen Waid, 20 (pictured left), and Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18 (pictured right).

Mother, 2 Sons Killed

Dead are Penny Caffey, 37, and sons Tyler, 8, and Mathew, 13.

"We feel confident that the motive was the fact that the juvenile daughter and one of the individuals in custody were dating and that the parents were attempting to break the relationship up," Rains County Sheriff David Traylor told reporters.

Sheriff Traylor said that Terry Caffey crawled 300 yards to his closest neighbor to get help, leaving a bloody trail. He had been shot in the head, twice in the back and twice near his shoulder.

Community, Congregation Devastated

The crime sent shockwaves through the community of Alba, Texas, a farming town with a population of about 1,500. The Caffeys served as the musicians for Miracle Faith Baptist Church, where the congregation was devastated by the news.

"Some had to be carried out of the church this morning," said church member Diane Dunlap. "They’re emotionally drained. When you see 17- and 18-year-old boys in tears, it takes a lot. They needed their mothers today, to walk with them and hold them in their arms."

"When I first heard, I was like, I don't even think I would have crawled out of the house," Rev. Todd McGahee told his congregation. "But God has a purpose for Terry's life. God has a reason. God gave him the strength to get out."
