Redskins' Taylor Dies From Gunshot Wound

Tuesday November 27, 2007
Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died from a gunshot wound after he was shot in the leg at his home by an intruder. Taylor slipped into a coma after losing a lot of blood as a result of the wound, which apparently severed his femoral artery.

Taylor was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery shortly after his girlfriend reported the shooting to 9-1-1.

Taylor, a Pro Bowl player, died early Tuesday as a result of his wound. He never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital.

According to his attorney in a criminal case, Richard Sharpstein, Taylor, his girlfriend and their 18-month-old daughter were in the master bedroom of their home when they heard a noise in the house. Taylor picked up a machete and started toward the door when someone burst in and opened fire with a handgun.

Investigators said they have yet to confirm that a burglary took place. Apparently, nothing was taken from the house.

"His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me," said Sharpstein. "It's a tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other plans."

Taylor, the fifth overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft after being chosen an All-American at the University of Miami. Taylor starred as a running back and defensive back at Gulliver Prep in Miami.
