Trial Begins in Student's Decapitation Case
Jury selection is expected to begin today in the case of a 22-year-old University of Texas student who was found shot, stabbed and dismembered in the apartment bathroom of the defendant. Jennifer Cave's body was discovered by a family friend Aug. 18, 2005.
Colton Pitonyak, 24, was the last person seen with Cave (pictured above) after the two went on a date, authorities said. The day after Cave's body was found, police named Pitonyak as a suspect and said they believed he had fled to Mexico.
On Aug. 24, 2005, Pitonyak (pictured) was arrested in Eagle Pass near the Mexican border with another Texas student, Laura Hall, 22. Hall told investigators that she and Pitonyak were on vacation in Mexico when Cave was killed.
But Hall's story soon started to unravel and she was charged with hindering apprehension. According to her arrest warrant, Hall told friends that Cave's death was an "accident."
In August 2006, Pitonyak's attorney Samuel Bassett tried to get the evidence collected at Pitonyak's apartment thrown out because he said the search of the apartment was illegal. His motion was rejected.
