Police Kill Cop-Shooting Suspect

Thursday December 28, 2006
A five-day statewide manhunt ended in Santa Ana Wednesday when a police shootout killed a man suspected in the shooting of two Long Beach police officers last week. The coroner is expected to identify the dead man as Oscar Gabriel Gallegos, a career criminal who has been deported to Mexico at least once.

The manhunt began Friday when two Long Beach officers pulled over Gallegos (pictured in mug shot) for running a red light. Gallegos got out of his car and began firing at officers Abram Yap and Roy Wade, Jr. while they were still sitting in their vehicle.

Yap was shot in the face. Wade, who finished police academy training three weeks ago, was shot in the chest and neck. Both officers were in critical condition, but expected to survive.

Police said Gallegos fired at another police vehicle as he was fleeing the shooting scene in his SUV.

On Wednesday, Long Beach police spotted Gallegos in a Toyota Camry driven by another man and put them under surveillance. When the Camry stopped at a strip mall, the Long Beach officers called for assistance from the Santa Ana police.

When the Santa Ana police arrived at the scene, the suspect believed to be Gallegos opened fire on the officers. He was shot and died at the scene. The other many did not fire at police, but has been arrested to determine his involvement.
