Parole Possible for 'Blind Faith' Killer

Saturday August 19, 2006
A New Jersey man, who once was next in line to be executed on the state's death row, has now received a 30-year sentence that would make him eligible for parole in 2014. Robert O. Marshall, whose conviction for arranging his wife's murder was turned into a book and television miniseries, was sentenced to life with no parole for 30 years, after his death sentence was overturned last year.

Marshall (pictured in mug shot) is now 65 years old. He was convicted in 1986 of hiring two men to kill his wife, Maria Marshall, at a rest stop on the Garden State Parkway. Prosecutors said he wanted to collect $1.5 million in life insurance. He was having an affair with another woman at the time.

The crime inspired the book ">Blind FaithBlind Faith by Joe McGinniss.

A federal appeals court threw out Marshall's death sentence because they said he did not receive adequate representation from his defense attorney. Prosecutors decided that it would be too difficult to try to get another death penalty verdict after 22 years.

I don’t think parole should even be thought of when someone has been taken off death row.
