Actor Mel Gibson Apologizes After DUI
Early Friday morning, an intoxicated Mel Gibson became belligerent with police during his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. According to L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy James Mee's report, Gibson used bad language, threatened the arresting officer, repeatedly banged himself against the police car interior and made anti-Semitic statements, including telling the policeman that, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."
The actor's temper raged to such a level that Mee requested a sergeant meet them when they arrived to the police station. At the station, one of the sergeants began videotaping the intoxicated Gibson. Mee also audio taped the entire conversation he and Gibson exchanged when he first pulled Gibson over and until they arrived at the station.
Once at the station, Gibson's hostility increased and he lashed out with verbal assaults on the officers. He was given two blood alcohol tests, handcuffed, and placed in a booking cell. Gibson then said he needed to urinate and began to make motions as if he was going to relieve himself on the cell floor. He also refused to sign the eight page report Mee had written, detailing much of Gibson's poor behavior and the anti-Semitic comments he made during his arrest.
Sanitized Police Report?
According to reports, Mee was told by his superiors to rewrite the report and to leave out much of the more distasteful behavior Gibson displayed while being arrested. It was explained to Mee that with the current situation in Israel, Gibson's anti-Semitic comments could incite increased hatred of Jews.
This is not the first time Gibson has been in trouble for displaying anti-Semitic behavior. In 2004, Gibson wrote, directed and produced "The Passion of the Christ," which was later blamed for an increase in anti-Jewish sentiments.
Gibson was released the following morning after his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence. The sheriff's department has since been under attack for 'sanitizing' the arrest report of Gibson.
The department denies the accusations and told TMZ.com, "The L.A. County Sheriff's Department investigation into the arrest of Mr. Gibson on suspicion of driving under the influence will be complete and will contain every factual piece of evidence. Nothing will be sanitized. There was absolutely no favoritism shown to this suspect or any other. When this file is presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney, it will contain everything. Nothing will be left out."
Mel Gibson's Statement
After his release, Gibson released the following statement:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable.
"I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
