Fugitive Darren Mack in Custody

Friday June 23, 2006
A Nevada man wanted in connection with the murder of his wife and the sniper shooting of a family court judge has turned himself in to authorities in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico after apparently negotiating with the Reno district attorney.

Darren Mack was flown from Mexico to Dallas and then extradited to Nevada. Mack was expected to turn himself in early Thursday, but did not show up until the early morning hours Friday.

"He was aware that things were tightening around him, with checkpoints that Mexican authorities were running," Reno Police Chief Mike Poehlman told reporters. "He was obviously following the media, that Mexican media picked up, which led to him contacting his attorneys." Fox News reported that Mack apparently negotiated a deal to spare him the death penalty if he turned himself in.

Mack is charged with the murder of his estranged wife, whose body was found in his garage on June 12, shortly after Judge Chuck Weller was shot in the chest while standing by the window of his courthouse office. He has yet to be charged in the attack on Weller.
