Latest Holloway Suspect Released

Tuesday May 23, 2006
The latest suspect detained in connection with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, who worked as a croupier at the hotel casino where the Alabama teen was staying in Aruba, has been released from detention, Dutch court officials said.

The latest detainee, identified in press reports as Guido Wever, was detained last Wednesday in Holland and questioned extensively by investigators. His Dutch attorney said Wever had been questioned three times in Aruba shortly after Holloway's disappearance and twice later by Dutch authorities, after he had returned to Holland.

Attorney Gerrad Spong told Dutch television that Wever was arrested for "assisting in the murder, battery and kidnapping of Natalee Holloway." Wever, a friend of Joran van der Sloot, denied ever seeing Natalee at the casino and said he did not know her.

Wever, 19, was freed hours before a scheduled court hearing on Aruba's request to transfer him to the island. Spong said the Aruban prosecutor was "persuaded there was an insufficient case to support the transfer request," and the hearing was canceled.

Meanwhile in Aruban, prosecutor Karin Janssen would not comment on the arrest and release of Wever. Holland police would not even confirmed to the press that he had been detained, saying only they were acting under orders from Aruban prosecutors.

No one has been charged in connection with the disappearance of Holloway, who failed to show up for a return flight to Alabama May 30, 2005 after visiting Aruba with her graduating senior classmates.
