Aruban Teen Arrested Because Witness Lied
Deputy police chief Gerold Dompig says the 19-year-old teen, who was arrested in the Natalee Holloway case and released a week later, was detained by investigators because of a false accusation by a witness -- the chief's own teenage son.
Gerold Dompig told The Birmingham News that his 19-year-old son Michael Dompig was upset over accusations about his father's handling of the investigation and told police about rumors that he heard concerning Geoffrey van Cromvoirt and it "went to far."
Dompig was replaced as the lead investigator on the Holloway case April 6. He told the News that he asked to be removed from the case because of rumors about his family.
Meanwhile, the attorney for Cromvoirt's family said the teen had "no relevant information" and was not involved in any drug offenses. He said Cromvoirt cooperated fully with the investigation and that was why he was released from custody.
"He at no time has met Natalee Holloway, nor has any relevant information pertaining to her disappearance," Eline Lotter Homan told the Associated Press. She said Cromvoirt was home with his family on the nights of May 29-30, 2005, when Natalee Holloway disappeared.
