Rapper 'Proof' Killed in Detroit Nightclub

Tuesday April 11, 2006
DeShaun Holton, known as the rapper Proof of the group D12 and a close friend of Eminem, was shot in the head and killed after an argument escalated into gunfire at a Detroit nightclub along Eight Mile, the road featured in Eminem's 2002 film.

Police said Holton (pictured) and another 35-year-old man were shot during the incident at the C.C.C. nightclub, a small bar. The other unidentified victim is in critical condition at St. John Hospital. Holton was dead on arrival at Holy Cross Hospital.

No suspects have been arrested in the shooting.

According to an article in the Detroit News, "In an eerie coincidence, Proof is shot and killed in Eminem’s music video for 'Like Toy Soldiers,' a song which acts as a warning against hip-hop wars escalating into real life violence. The video shows a bloodied Proof lying in a hospital bed while doctors try to revive him, and also depicts the rapper's funeral, attended by Eminem and the other members of D12."

Holton, also known as Big Proof and P to friends, was the best man at Eminem's January wedding. The two met at Detroit's Hip-Hop Shop, a clothing store that transforms into a hip-hop club by night. They formed the rap group D12 which records on Interscope Records.
