Andres Yates' Trial Delayed Until June
Judge Belinda Hill granted a defense request to delay the start of the retrail of Andrea Yates so that two key defense expert witnesses could schedule time to testify for the Houston woman who is accused of drowning her five children.
Although Judge Hill had scheduled jury selection to begin Monday, she instead rescheduled the jury selection for June 22 and the trial to begin June 26.
Yates' attorneys argued that the two expert witnesses would not be able to testify if the trial began this week. They told the judge without their testimony Yates would not receive a fair trial.
Yates was convicted of the murder of three of her children in 2002, but the conviction was overturned because an prosecution witness gave false testimony. Yates turned down a plea deal that would have given her 35 years in prison, instead of life, and entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
