Tampa Man Gets 200 Years for Gay Rapes
A 46-year-old Tampa man has been sentenced to 200 years in federal prison for using the date-rape drug GHB to torture and sexually assault nine men he met in gay bars, but the full extent of Steven Lorenzo's crimes may still not be known.
Lorenzo was convicted in November 2005 of drug facilitated crimes of violence against ten victims including two homicide victims. This week he was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment on all ten counts.
According to the testimony of seven of his victims, Lorenzo would met his victims in gay bars and slip them GHB. He would then take them to his Tampa home and sexually torture them. Two of the victims, both 26, died.
Lorenzo has also been investigated in connection with the disappearance of three gay men from a complex across the street from a condominium Lorenzo owns in Fort Lauderdale, but he has not been charged in those cases.
"We have never been able to make a connection in those cases," Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman Det. Katherine Collins said. Investigators believe there may have been many more victims during Lorenzo's crime spree from February 2000 to May 2004.
