The former employee began firing inside the building shortly after 9 p.m. Monday, sending 50 to 60 workers scrambling out of the building. Santa Barbara County deputies responding to the scene immediately found two people dead outside the building.
A later search of the large mail complex turned up four more bodies, including that of the shooter, who apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Sheriff Jim Anderson.
One postal employee is in critical condition with a gunshot to the head. None of the victims or the shooter had been identified by authorities early Tuesday.
Shooter Was On Psychological Leave
Investigators said the shooter was Jennifer Sanmarco, 44, of Grants, N.M. who had been placed on medical leave for psychological reasons and had not worked at the facility in more than two years. She apparently got inside the fenced grounds by driving close behind another vehicle at the guarded gate.
Sheriff Anderson said she used a 9 mm handgun in the attack and reloaded at least once.
