Maurice Clarett Surrenders to Police

Tuesday January 3, 2006
Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett surrendered to police on charges of robbing two people with a gun behind a bar -- a robbery that was apparently interrupted when the bar's owner came outside and recognized Clarett.

Columbus, Ohio police had been searching for Maurice Clarett, a former Ohio State running back who led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2002, after the holdup of two people outside the Columbus, Ohio downtown bar Sunday.

A man and a woman behind the Opium Lounge in Columbus said a man dressed in black wearing a cap was trying to rob them at gunpoint around 2 a.m. Sunday when the manager of the club came outside, saw the gunman and said, "Maurice!" -- recognizing the man as the former Ohio State star.

The man feld in an SUV with two other men. The only thing that he took from the couple was a cell phone.

After Ohio State's championship season, Clarett was suspended from the team after he was charged with filing a false report in which he claimed $10,000 worth of property was stolen from a car he was using. He was also accused of receiving unallowed benefits from a family friend.

Clarett was drafted by the Dever Broncos, but failed to make the team.
