Andrea Yates to Leave Prison for Hospital

Tuesday December 20, 2005
Andrea Yates, who was granted a new trial after an appeals court threw out her conviction for drowning her five children, will be moved from prison to a state mental hospital to await her next court date.

Yates will be moved to the Rusk State Hospital, near the Skyview prison, a psychiatric unit where she's been jailed for nearly three years since she was convicted of the murders of two of her children.

The hospital is a lockdown facility that treats patients who have been found innocent by reason of insanity.

A preliminary hearing for her second capital murder trial is scheduled Jan. 9.

"All parties agree that she was and is mentally ill, and she needs the expert assistance," her attorney George Parnham said.
