Restrictions Lifted on Serial Killer Homolka

Monday December 5, 2005
The families of her victims are hopeful that a judge's decision to lift all 14 restrictions on serial killer Karla Homolka, imposed by the court before she was released from prison, will be appealed by the Quebec government.

Quebec Justice Minister Yvon Marcoux decided to appeal the ruling just two days after a judge decided that Homolka can go where she wants and meet anyone she pleases, including her victim's families.

The decision by Quebec Superior Court Justice James Brunton to lift all of the restrictions on Homolka was another development in the Homolka case that outraged the families of her victims. The first came when she was given a plea bargain deal in which she received a sentence of only 12 years for the rape and murder of three young girls in exchange for testifying against her husband, Paul Bernardo.

Homolka portrayed herself as an abused wife forced into participating in Bernardo's criminal activity, but several videotapes that Homolka and Bernardo made of their crimes surfaced later, the truth to Homolka's involvement in the crimes came to light.

Quebec Justice Department lawyer Joanne Marceau said Justice James Brunton "misinterpreted the criteria used to determine if Homolka presented an imminent and serious danger." However, Brunton's decision is still in effect pending the appeal, meaning Homolka has no restrictions on her freedom.
