Red Ribbon Campaign Turns 20

Thursday October 27, 2005
The National Red Ribbon Campaign, the Drug Enforcement Administration's annual drug prevention effort, celebrated its 20th anniversary this week with an estimated 80 million participants nationwide.

The Red Ribbon campaign was started in 1985 after Mexican drug traffickers tortured and brutally murdered DEA Special Agent Enrique (Kiki) Camarena.

"When we see children proudly pledge never to use drugs, we see them embrace Kiki's spirit and his belief that one person can make a powerful difference in our battle against drugs," DEA Administrator Karen P. Tandy said at the DEA headquarters' event.

Red Ribbon Week runs from Oct. 23-31.
