Manson Family Member Bruce Davis Denied Parole

Thursday September 29, 2005
A former member of the Charles Manson Family, who never killed anyone but was present at the murders of Gary Hinman and Donald (Shorty) Shea, has been turned down for parole once again.

Bruce Davis, now 62 years old, is serving a life sentence at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo. He has been before the state parole panel more than 20 times.

In July 1969, Davis was present when Manson chopped off Gary Hinman's left ear. In August 1969, he assisted Manson, Tex Watson and Steve Grogan, in the murder of Spahn's Ranch hand Donald (Shorty) Shea. Although he did not participate in the murders, his presence at the scenes was enough to convict him and get him a life sentence.

Davis is not as well known as some of the other Manson Family members, but he was once briefly suspected of being the Zodiac Killer -- a California serial killer never identified -- before being ruled out as a suspect by the FBI.

In prison Davis became a born-again Christian and spends his time reading theology books, playing the guitar and working in the prison's Protestant chapel.

(1) David Basker, J.D. says:

This man has long since paid for his crimes. He has led an exemplary life inside prison walls for close to 40 years. He has found Christ and been an example and spiritual leader for others. He has earned and deserves the right to be set free ~ he never personally ever hurt anyone. Way back when, he was just too whacked out on drug use to get it together to leave out AFTER he learned about the terrible crimes that had been done by dysfunctional psychotic outcasts that were drawn to Manson’s hippie cult of whores, drugs and rock and roll. Sadly, thereafter he went for a ride never suspecting that another terrible crime was going to be commited ~ which again he did not take any part in. His convictions were for “felony murder” not for participating in the crimes. In both convictions he was himself a victim caught in a trap much like someone who waits outside while an accomplice goes into a store to rob it and ends up killing or being killed. Davis never consciously intended to be a part of any murders and never condoned them. He left the clan. Later on, he turned himself in after he learned that there was a warrant for his arrest. Over twenty years ago, a “real Manson family killer” was set free and has led a normal life. Bruce Davis should be set free too ~ He has long since paid for his crimes and has earned a long list of exemplary citizens who support his being granted parole ~ which pray tell GOD in heaven will touch the hearts of those who are able to grant him, his wife, daughter, sister, chuch and all those who really know and love him a well deserved MERCY ~ now that he grown to be an old man inside prison walls (no more) please GOD ! Keep Bruce Davis and everyone else convicted of these horrible crimes in jail for the rest of their natural lives.. Then when they do die, the devil they worshipped can have them back!

We should all be glad that he has found the Lord while in prison where he should stay until death. And we should let the Lord decide his fate after he is dead.

Bruce Davis was a graduate of Roane County High School in Kingston, Tn. He was voted most likely to suceed. In one way he did and in one way he did not.

Bruce Davis is where he belongs. If he’s so religious, I’m sure he doesn’t mind being there till he dies because he’ll be with God, right?

What a crock of total hogwash, Basker. These Manson killers all claim to be “christians” now. When you say “he never personally ever hurt anyone” (great grammar), you are outright lying. He was involved in the Hinman and Shea murders, and guess what? YOU WERENT THERE, so your portrayal of him as some sort of innocent babe in the woods is pure fantasy that doesnt go along with the known facts of the case. Also, Joel Pugh might disagree with you about his murder history, if he was still alive to do so. The same with Doreen Gaul. The same with Ronald Hughes. The same with Christopher “Zero” Haught. None of these dirtbag Manson killers would even be alive today if the death penalty hadnt been banned for a short period in the mid 70s. So Bruce Davis can rot in his cell like the animal that he is until the day his “Lord” takes him home, which will hopefully be very soon.

(10) Thomas says:

Everyone becomes a christian when they see it is a potential way out for their actions. Becoming a christian is between the person and God, it does not mean the person has change just asked for forgiveness from God. It is not a right of passage for serial killers or others to be granted access back to society. If we buy into this then we should release all prisoners that claim to be christians. I don’t see how anyone can suggest that Bruce Davis be set free to live in public. Bruce admitted to committing over 30 murders. New York police “feel certain” of his guilt in the May 1970 strangulation of voice teacher Eric Tcherkezian. He committed horific crimes that are beyond any sain persons ability. The US as a country needs start executing convicted killers…fast. Stop the appeals delays. Once our society sees we don’t tolerate killers, pertifiles and people that committ horific crimes the numbers will drop. Singapore is a great example of a country that does not tolerate crap and their crime rates a very low.

It is unbelievable how people believe becoming a christian creates a right of passage for getting out of a bad situation they have created for themselves. Becoming a christian is a relationship between God, Christ and the person NOT the entire social society of this world. God will forgive you but that does not change the past or what you may do in the future. Actual David Bruce could kill every day and asked for forgiveness and accept Christ as his savior and by christian guild lines…he would be a christian. David Bruce admitted to killing over 32 people. Actually, killed a brother of a close family friend of mine. The best thing that could be done with him is executed! Set an example that the US will not tolerate…drugs, craziness, etc. as an excuse for killing people…whether one to hundreds. Same goes for petifiles. Charles Manson should be executive also.

Basker has his right to express what he thinks about Bruce Davis.I have researched Davis since 1987 and find he knew exactly who was to be killed and was involved in one manner or another.I obtained his parole reports and his story of just his involvemnt in the Shea/Hinman murders changes, but he always minimizes his participation.
One former follower said that it was Bruce Davis they ‘feared even more than Manson.’

Read My Life with Charles Manson by one time follower Paul Watkins; The Family-latest edition by Ed Sanders and,of course Helter Skelter by Vince Bugliosi, and then see how much Davis was ignorant of the muders.Did he go to the police to help-no!

(15) Chad Fortman says:

We need stop letting murders stay alive we need start doing public hangings again.
There so many sick ass people out there need just die. People who kill for joy need to not suck up the tax payers dollar just kill them be done with it.
We have way to many in jail and people that kill need to be delt with. If someone did it on accident i see jail time its not something they chose to do.
But sick people like this need be hung, stones ore shot. Are country full to many sick people and they need be delt with.
I also think sick movies like Saw and hostile promote nothing good to people and need to be stoped from being produced.
Just off with his head be done with it
