Duncan to Face Death Penalty in Idaho

Wednesday August 24, 2005
Joseph Edward Duncan III will face the possible death penalty on all six charges facing him in Idaho stemming from the murder of Shasta Groene's family and the kidnapping of her and her brother Dylan.

Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Douglas said he will seek the death penalty on all six charges against Duncan -- three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of first-degree kidnapping.

All of those charges relate to the murders of Shasta's mother, older brother and her mother's boyfriend at their Idaho home. Idaho has decided to let federal authorities file charges against Duncan in the kidnapping of Shasta and Dylan and the murder of Dylan.

Duncan appeared in court to be arraigned on the charges; he did not speak during the 30-minute hearing and did not enter a plea to the charges. His trial is scheduled Jan. 17, 2006.
