Fugitive Couple Captured in Ohio

Wednesday August 10, 2005
Authorities have captured George and Jennifer Hyatte in Ohio hours after they found just across the state line in Kentucky a mini-van the couple used to escape from Roane County, Tennessee after a shoot-out at the courthouse that left a conrrectional guard dead.

The couple was taken into custody by a Columbus, Ohio SWAT team without incident at a motel. FBI Agents, U.S. Marshalls and the Columbus Police Department participated in the capture shortly after 10:08 p.m. Wednesday.

Police got a tip that the couple was in the Columbus area around 8 p.m. Investigation lead authorities to a motel room where the couple was apprehended without incident.

Weapons were found in the couple's motel room, but authorities would not give details. Both suspects will be returned to Tennessee to face first-degree murder charges.

A tip from the public lead police to a van parked outside a hotel just south of Cincinnati, Ohio in Kentucky. A restaurant employee recognized the couple from seeing them in a convenience store. The woman had a bandage on her arm and they were acting nervously, she said.

Courthouse Shootout

The mnahunt for the couple began Tuesday after Jennifer Forsyth Hyatte, 31, ambushed two guards as they were leading George Hyatte, 34, from a courthouse hearing in Kingston, TN. Guard Wayne "Cotton" Morgan was fatally shot during the escape.

Police later found blood on the driver's side of an abandoned vehicle in Roane County, leading them to believe Jennifer Hyatte had been wounded. The couple changed to a Chevy minevan that was found Wednesday in Kentucky. Police said the Hyattes hired a cab to take them from Erlanger, KY to Columbus, OH.
