Evidence Mounts Against Joseph Edward Duncan

Thursday July 14, 2005
The information that eight-year-old Shasta Groene gave investigators about her kidnapper after she was rescued in a Denny's restaurant near her home was valuable, but the shocking evidence collected from the vehicle of Joseph Edward Duncan links him to four Idaho murders.

Shasta told police that Duncan had a shotgun, wore black gloves, used night-vision goggles and used zip-ties to subdue and kill three members of her family May 16 and all of those items were recovered from the stolen Jeep that Duncan was driving when he was arrested.

Police also found a wallet of one of the murder victims in the vehicle, but probably the most damaging evidence discovered was a camcorder Duncan used to film himself abusing Shasta and her nine-year-old brother Dylan.

He also filmed several aborted attempts to kill both of the children, but in each attempt a gesture or action by one of the children would cause him to stop. In one scene, according to The Pacific Northwest Inlander, Dylan was gagged and bound and only able to move his hands. Duncan stopped his apparent attempt to kill the boy when he signed "I Love You" to his sister.

According to court papers, Duncan later did kill Dylan with the shotgun and cremated his body at the remote camp site where he held the children for seven weeks.
