Suspect's Dad Arrested; Joran's Story Changes

Thursday June 23, 2005
Paulus Van Der Sloot, the father of one of the suspects being held in connection with the investigation into the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, has been arrested and taken into custody for questioning by Aruban authorities.

Paulus Van Der Sloot, a judicial official in Aruba, is the father of Joran Van Der Sloot who is suspected as the last person to see Natalee Holloway before she disappeared May 30. Police said the elder Van Der Sloot was being held as a suspect, not a witness, in the case.

The arrest of Paulus apparently came as a result of statements he has made recently to his wife and to the press that conflicted with previous statements he made to police. The conflict involved the timeline of events on the night the Alabama teen disappeared.

Natalee's family members have been telling reporters for several days that they believed Paulus Van Der Sloot knew more that he told police about the missing honors student. In Aruba, police and arrest and detain people merely to question them; no charges have to be filed.

Story Changes Again

Fox News is reporting that Joran Van Der Sloot's mother is saying her son has changed his story again. According to her, Joran admits that he was alone on the beach with Natalee the night she disappeared, but she says, he did nothing to harm her.

Joran's first story was that he and his two friends, Satish and Deepak Kalpoe, dropped Natalee off at the Holiday Inn where she was staying. He later said that the three dropped him off at his house.

Now, according to his mother, he admits that he was alone on the beach with Natalee, making him the last known person to see her before she vanished.
