Jessica Lunsford May Have Been Buried Alive

Saturday April 9, 2005
Jessica Lunsford may have still been alive in a single-wide mobile home 100 yards from her home when Sheriff deputies came by twice during a canvas of the neighborhood in the early days after her disappearance and may have actually been buried alive.

CNN is reporting that "sources close to the investigation" said that the 10-year-old may have been still alive when she was buried in the back of a mobile home at which John Evander Couey was staying with relatives. Preliminary autopsy reports showed that Jessica died from asphyxiation, which would be consistent with being buried alive.

Court documents release this week indicated that Couey, who has been charged in Jessica's murder, was hiding in the mobile home the second time deputies came by and knocked on the door during a neighborhood search.

Deputies visited the home twice and nothing raised their suspicions, the court papers said.

"... But Couey's timeline of the events after he kidnapped Jessica Lunsford leaves open the possibility that she was alive, and in the house, at the time of the first, and possibly the second, interview," the documents said.
