Jackson Attorney Seeking 'Fair' Jurors

Monday February 14, 2005
Jury selection in the Michael Jackson trial begin in earnest today as attorneys begin questioning a pool of potential candidates who will decide the fate of the singer in his child molestation case.

Jury selection was delayed for a week in the case due to a death in the family of one of Jackson's attorneys. The jurors have already filled out an eight-page questionnaire and some have been eliminated due to hardships the expected six-month trial would cause.

The question is if Jackson's attorneys will be able to find jurors that will give their client a fair trial in a pool of jurors who are mostly white, older and middle class.

"If you talk about a jury of your peers, it would have to be Madonna, Liza Minnelli and maybe Elvis," former San Francisco prosecutor and trial watcher Jim Hammer told reporters. "Michael looks like nobody else in the courtroom."

Other courtroom observers agreed that the ideal juror for Jackson would be young, black and without children, while the best jurors for the prosecution would be older parents who respect law enforcement.
