Couple Accused of Torture Waive Extradition

Thursday February 10, 2005
A couple charged with torturing five of their seven adopted children, who were captured in Utah Friday, have waived extradition back to Florida where they will face aggravated child abuse charges.

John and Linda Dollar were traced by their cell phone and arrested in a remote section of southeast Utah after five of their adopted children, ages 12 to 17, told investigators they were subjected to electric shock, beatings with hammers and having their toenails pulled out with pliers.

Authorities said the children were severely malnourished and had physical injuries supporting their allegations of torture. Police found an electric cattle prod and other items that were used in the torture in the Florida home of the Dollars.

Police say the Dollars have isolated the children in a series of secluded homes in the past three years. The children were homeschooled rather than attending public schools. Neighbors say the children were rarely seen outside the home.
