Prosecutors Attack Key Peterson Expert

Friday October 22, 2004
A key defense witness, who testified that Laci Peterson's baby probably died five days after she disappeared, was derailed under cross-examination when prosecutors pointed out he had made a huge assumption in making his calculations.

Dr. Charles March, a gynecologist, testified that Conner Peterson probably died Dec. 29, 2002 at the earliest. He based his finds in part on the fact that Laci Peterson told a friend she was pregnant on June 9. The assumption he made was that Laci told her friend on the same day that she found out that she was pregnant. There has been no evidence presented that she found out that she was pregnant on June 9.

When confronted with his assumption, Dr. March became visibly frustrated and responded emotionally, at one time throwing his hands up and saying, "Give me a break!"

Later on redirect defense attorney Mark Geragos noted that Laci had told several friends of her pregnancy June 9.
