Peterson Evidence Collection Questioned

Thursday October 21, 2004
Scott Peterson's defense attorney Mark Geragos continued to try to show that police ignored evidence in the disappearance of Laci Peterson because they were so focused on his client as the only suspect in the case.

Geragos also brought out an alternate theory on how Laci's body could have ended up in the San Francisco Bay when he questioned East Bay Regional Parks Officer Timothy Philipps about a canal near an area where transients hang out that drains directly into the bay.

Philipps testified that homeless people often set up camps near a bridge that overlooks the canal, which is easily accessible from Interstate 580.

Philipps also told the jury about a bag that he collected near where Laci's body washed up that he thought smelled like human remains. Geragos has brought up the bag previously during the trial because it was never tested for evidence by police investigators.

In other testimony, dog trainer Ron Seitz said his tracking dog did not pick up any trace of Laci at the Berkeley Marina four days after she disappeared like the dog of another trainer, who prosecutors called to testify.
