Scott Peterson Defense Case Begins Today

Tuesday October 12, 2004
Scott Peterson's defense attorneys will finally get the opportunity to present the jury with their case today, after months of prosecution testimony in the trial for the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son Conner.

As the defense case prepared to open, media pundits speculated that defense attorney Mark Geragos might not put up much of a case at all, if any, after he had successfully raised so many doubts about the prosecution's case, which included no direct evidence pointing to Scott Peterson as the killer.

Others expect Geragos to call expert witnesses that will testify that baby Conner was 36 to 38 weeks old when died, rather than 33 weeks at the time Laci Peterson was reported missing. He may present evidence that indicates that the baby was actually born alive before it died, which would mean Scott Peterson could not have possibly committed the crime.

Geragos from the opening statements in the trial has insisted that evidence in the case will not only show that his client is not guilty, but "stone cold innocent." His theory is that someone else abducted the pregnant Laci and later dumped her body in the San Francisco Bay after learning of Scott's highly publicized alibi.

His argument is if the police divers with all of their high-tech equipment never found Laci's body or any anchors that would have held her body down, it was because her body was not placed their until much later.
