Baton Rouge Serial Killer Found Guilty

Tuesday October 12, 2004
It took a Baton Rouge jury less than 80 minutes to find Derrick Todd Lee guilty of capital murder in the death of Charlotte Murray Pace after the defense rested its case without calling a single witness.

It was the second murder conviction for 35-year-old Derrick Todd Lee. He received a life sentence in August for the murder of Geralyn DeSoto in West Baton Rouge Parish. During the Pace trial, prosecutors presented DNA evidence linking Lee to five other murdered and raped women in Louisiana.

Lee faces the death penalty in the Pace case. When the penalty phase of the trial begins Wednesday, defense attorneys are expected to argue that Lee is mentally retarded.

Lee's lawyers rested without calling a witness, because they said the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
