Phil Spector Indicted, Calls D.A. 'Hitler'

Monday September 27, 2004
As expected by his attorney, music producer Phil Spector was indicted by a grand jury on charges that he murdered actress Lana Clarkson on Feb. 3, 2003. In a brief court appearance in Los Angeles, Spector pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Clarkson, who was working as a hostess at the House of Blues at the time of her death, was found shot to death at Spector's home after leaving the club with him earlier. She died from a single gunshot in her mouth.

Spector claims Clarkson killed herself, but prosecutors said police found blood and gunshot residue on Spector. Evidence was also found that indicated he had cleaned and moved the gun after the shooting, police said. Spector has a history of pointing guns at people.

The grand jury indictment means the prosecution will not have to reveal the evidence they have against Spector until the trial, which could begin as early at December 16.

Spector told reporters, "The actions of the Hitler-like district attorney and his storm trooper henchmen are reprehensible, unconscionable and despicable."
