Mom Gets Letter From Missing Texas Girl

Monday September 13, 2004
The mother of Jami Hicks, a 12-year-old girl missing from her Mesquite, Texas home, received a letter from her daughter indicating that she thinks that she is on "vacation" with her stepfather on the East Coast of the United States.

An Amber Alert was issued for Jami Hicks last week after her mother told police that she had been taken by her stepfather, James Roy Hadachek. See photos. Police issued the alert only after Angela Hadachek, Jami's mother, showed police a letter written by the stepfather that said he wanted to make Jami his wife.

In the letter received from Jami this week, she wrote her half-brothers to tell them she had visited Busch Gardens in Virginia, Times Square, the Atlantic Ocean and Six Flags. She said they were planning to go to Hershey, Pennsylvania. They letter was mailed from Pennsylvania and was addressed in Hudachek's handwritting.

"The letter is about the only hope I've seen so far," Angela Hudachek told reporters.

Mesquite Police Sgt. Shannon Greenhaw said the FBI, U.S. Marshals and the Border Patrol are assisting in the search. "Until we find him, we don't know where he's at," Mesquite Police Sgt. Shannon Greenhaw told reporters. "Believe me, if we knew where he was with any certainty we would be activating an Amber Alert in that city." She said the FBI, U.S. Marshals and the Border Patrol are assisting in the search for Jami.

Over the weekend, an Amber Alert was issued for Jami in South Carolina, but was cancelled after leads there failed to pan out. Police in Pennsylvania have been informed that Jami and Hudachek are possibly in the area, but no official amber alert has been issued.
