Scott Lied to Family, Closest Supporters

Thursday August 26, 2004
Wiretapped telephone messages played in the Scott Peterson double murder trial reveal a pattern of deceit shortly after the disappearance of his pregnant wife Laci that extended to his closest family, friends and supporters.

Over the objection of defense attorneys, tapes recorded by a police investigator in the weeks following Laci Peterson's disappearance were played for the jury, who heard Scott Peterson lie to his mother, mother-in-law, other family members, friends and supporters.

At one point in the investigation, when police thought they had spotted a body in the San Francisco Bay, where the bodies of Laci and her unborn child were later found, Peterson went to the bay area, but told numerous people on the telephone that he was in other locations.

The wiretaps also revealed that less than a month after Laci's disappearance and before she was confirmed dead, Peterson was negotiating with a real estate agent to sell their house along with all of the furniture in it immediately. He told the agent, "Kinda keep it quiet, all right?"
